Thursday,November 05,2009 Building Permits Sept The value of building permits increased 1.6% to $5.1 billion in September. The value of building permits totalled $5.0 billion in August, up 7.2% from July.
Friday,November 06,2009 Labour Force Survey Oct Following two months of moderate growth, employment decreased by 43,000 in October, all in part time. This drop pushed the unemployment rate up 0.2 percentage points to 8.6%. Employment increased for the second consecutive month, up 31,000 in September, driven by large full-time gains. The unemployment rate fell by 0.3 percentage points to 8.4%.
Thursday,November 12,2009 New Housing Price Index Sept Contractors' selling prices rose 0.5% in September following a 0.1% increase in August. This was the largest month-over-month increase since January 2008 (+0.6%). Contractors' selling prices increased 0.1% in August following a 0.3% advance in July.
Friday,November 13,2009 Canadian international merchandise trade Sept Canada's merchandise exports rose 3.5% in September, while there was little change in imports. As a result, Canada's trade deficit with the world narrowed to $927 million from $2.0 billion in August. Canada's merchandise exports and imports both fell in August, after gains in July. Exports declined 5.1%, as a result of a 5.0% reduction in volumes. Imports decreased 2.8% as import volumes edged down 0.3%.
Friday,November 13,2009 New motor vehicle sales Sept New motor vehicle sales increased 1.2% to 128,415 units in September following a slight decrease in August. Higher sales of North American-built passenger cars were responsible for most of the increase. New motor vehicle sales fell 0.3% to 126,401 units in August.
Monday,November 16,2009 Monthly Survey of Manufacturing Sept Manufacturing sales rose 1.4% in September to $41.7 billion, largely reflecting increases in the motor vehicle industry. Manufacturing sales have increased in three of the past four months, after dropping to a recent low of $38.5 billion in May. Despite the recent gains, sales remained 18.6% below September 2008 levels. Manufacturing sales declined 2.1% in August following a 5.2% gain in July.
Wednesday,November 18,2009 Consumer Price Index Oct Consumer prices rose 0.1% in October compared with October 2008, following a 0.9% decline in September. This was the first 12-month increase since May 2009. Consumer prices fell 0.9% in the 12 months to September, following a 0.8% decrease in August.
Thursday,November 19,2009 Wholesale trade Sept Wholesale sales in current dollars edged up 0.2% in September, following a 1.5% decline in August. Higher sales in the machinery and electronic equipment sector, and the food, beverages and tobacco products sector offset weaker sales in the automotive products sector. Sales excluding the automotive products sector rose 0.6%. Wholesale sales in current dollars fell 1.4% to $41.0 billion in August.
Thursday,November 19,2009 Leading Indicators Oct The composite leading index increased 0.7% in October, its fourth straight advance. In October, 8 of the 10 components expanded, the same as in September. Housing remained the fastest-growing component. While the US leading indicator continued to recover, this has been slow to translate into higher demand for factories in Canada. The composite leading index rose by 1.1% in September, its fourth straight gain, while August was revised up from 1.1% to 1.2%.
Thursday,November 19,2009 Canada's international transactions in securities Sept Foreign demand for Canadian securities was up strongly in September, as non-residents added $13.6 billion to their portfolios, mainly equities. Canadian investors, in contrast, removed $4.8 billion from their holdings of foreign securities in September. Non-residents invested further in Canadian securities, adding $5.1 billion to their portfolios. Meanwhile, Canadian investors adjusted their portfolios of foreign securities, moving from foreign debt to foreign stocks for a net reduction of $112 million.
Monday,November 23,2009 Retail Trade Sept Retail sales rose 1.0% in September, the seventh increase in nine months. The increases were widespread with six of eight sectors showing gains. In volume terms, retail sales increased 1.2%. Retail sales rose 0.8% in August.
Tuesday,November 24,2009 Employment Insurance Sept The number of people receiving regular Employment Insurance benefits rose by 54,300 (7.1%) in September, following two months of declines. The largest increases in September occurred in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia. The number of people receiving regular Employment Insurance benefits in August fell 2.4% (-19,100) from July.
