In March, contractors took out building permits worth $6.8 billion, up 4.7% from February following a 7.6% increase the previous month. The gain was the result of higher construction intentions for both institutional and commercial buildings, mostly in Ontario. |
The total value of permits rose 7.5% to $6.5 billion in February, following an 11.4% decline in January. The advance in February was the result of an increase in the non-residential sector, which offset the decrease in the residential sector. |

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. said there was a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 244,900 housing starts in April, up 14% from the previous month, and well ahead of the 204,000 figure economists had been predicting.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation estimates there were 14,517 actual housing starts in March, which translates to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 215,600 units. March's seasonally adjusted rate was up from 205,300 units in February. |

Employment increased by 58,000 in April, mostly in full-time work. This was the second consecutive month of notable gains after four months of little change. With more people searching for work, the unemployment rate increased by 0.1 percentage points to 7.3%. |
Following four months of little change, employment increased by 82,000 in March, mostly in full-time work. This brought the unemployment rate down 0.2 percentage points to 7.2%. Compared with 12 months earlier, employment was up 1.1% or 197,000. Almost all of this growth was in full-time employment, up 181,000 (+1.3%), while part-time employment edged up. The total number of hours worked rose 1.6% over the same period. |

According to statistics released today by The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA), national resale housing activity edged up 0.8% in April 2012. The national average home price edged up 0.9% on a year-over-year basis in April.

Sales activity over MLS® Systems of Canadian real estate Boards and Associations rose 2.5% from February to March 2012. The increase lifted national activity to its highest monthly level since April 2010. Activity in March was up from the previous month in two-thirds of all local markets, with Toronto, Calgary, and Edmonton contributing most to the national increase. |
